Hungary
Home to a branch of the Museum of Applied Arts, the evolution of interior decor is showcased in one of Hungary’s finest Baroque mansions.
Nagytétény Palace can trace its roots back to the 13th century, when a Gothic manor was built on the grounds. In the mid-18th century, Baron József Rudnyánszky replaced the existing building with a newer and grander Baroque palace. The 20th century wasn’t kind to the estate, with a major fire gutting the interior, and World War II seriously damaging the structure. After the war, the estate was restored and made into a branch of the Museum of Applied Arts. Today, the stupendously restored palace is one of the finest Baroque manors in the country, housing an exhibition that traces the development of European furniture from 15th century Gothic to 19th century Biedermeier styles. Among the 300 objects on display is a fabulous collection of fully-functional timepieces from the 17th to 19th centuries. Please note: the museum is closed on Mondays.
