Oman
This beautiful fort surrounded by date palms is one of the largest in the country.
The exact origins of the Nakhal Fort are unknown, though it definitely existed in during pre-Islamic times. Over the centuries, the structure was rebuilt and expanded, taking an irregular shape as it worked around the boulders of Mount Nakhal, most recently in 1834 when the current walls, towers, and entrance were built. From crenellations to spiked doors for repelling battering rams, the fort has accrued a variety of defensive features over its many years of service. In the museum, you’ll find a collection of military paraphernalia as well as artefacts from everyday life. From the fort’s hilltop position, you’ll see the surrounding area is filled with date palms, which gave the fort its name- ‘Nakhal’ means palm. On Fridays you get an extra helping of local culture when the fort hosts a goat market.
