Thailand
Thailand’s oldest city might be sleepy, but it has some fantastic cultural attractions, including the world’s tallest chedi and a royal summer palace.
With archaeological finds dating back to the 4th century, Nakhon Pathom might just be the oldest city in Thailand. Its main landmark is the 118 meter tall Phra Pathom Chedi - the world’s tallest Buddhist monument, allegedly built on the spot that Buddhism was first introduced to Thailand. Within the complex, you’ll also find a giant golden Buddha, clear quartzite Buddha, and many smaller temple halls. At Wat Sisathong, dedicated to Phra Rahu, the god of darkness, worshippers come seeking blessings from the deity with eight black offerings. The beautiful ‘Thai-Gothic’ Sanam Chan Palace, with its fairytale covered bridge, was the summer residence of King Rama VI, and the many outbuildings in the surrounding park make for a picturesque place to unwind. Nakhon Pathom also has a famously authentic floating market behind Wat Lampaya, where you can ride a boat past vendors selling local products and produce, and traditional food like curry fish patties.
