Kenya
This up-and-coming city is a great base for exploring the area's wealth of natural and historical attractions.
Nakuru, Kenya's fourth largest city, is quickly transforming from provincial to pleasant, with gentrification already bestowing it with the better aspects of Nairobi. While the city has its fair share of cafes (Moca Loca is worth seeking out), galleries, and museums, the real attractions lay outside of town. At Hyrax Hill, you'll find a prehistoric site, and museum exhibiting artefacts from civilizations that are up to 3000 years old. The Menengai Crater and Mau Mau Cave are perfect places to visit if you're looking for a natural excursion (be sure to get a local guide). The crater was formed over 1 million years ago, and it has not erupted in over 350 years. The city is also a great base for visiting Lake Nakuru National Park, one of the finest in the country, which is famed for its flocks of flamingos, black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, hippos, and endangered Rothschild's giraffes.
