The waterfalls and lush forest in this park provided the perfect setting for King Rama V to court his queen-to-be.
Before being made a national park in 1975, Namtok Phlio National Park was simply a lush spanse of forest. The beautiful namesake Phlio waterfall, and lush rainforest captivated King Rama V in the 19th century, and it was here that he courted his queen to be, marking the location with a now-moss-covered chedi. In 1881, Rama’s queen drowned, so added a pyramid housing her ashes to the park’s landscape. Today, visitors stop at to the beautiful waterfall, which tumbles down into a fish-filled pool that’s a popular swimming spot for locals, or take hike another 1.2 kilometers into the jungle to see the king’s monuments.
