This system of caves is littered with the fossilized remains of animals that got stuck here millions of years ago.
The Naracoorte Caves National Park were discovered about 30 years ago, by a paleontologist who accidentally broke through a wall and into a passage that led him to the treasure trove of history. After the cave’s formation about 200 million years ago, the erosion and growth of the caves meant that holes were created at the top. Mammals and other creatures would fall into these holes making them a sort of death trap for the creatures. However, it is this reason why there are so many fascinating preserved skeletons that you can see today. Out of the 28 caves, 4 are open to the public, and while the entry to the caves is free, tour fees are not included.
