Rwanda
This awe-inspiring site northeast of Kigali commemorates Rwanda’s struggle for liberation and is a symbol of national unity.
In the Northern Province of the Gicumbi district, atop beautiful rolling hills, the headquarters of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) have been converted into the open air National Liberation Museum park. The park is a hopeful and victorious site which tells of the Rwandan liberation struggle through the buildings scattered across the grounds. Several houses sheltered prominent actors in the RPF and RPA, with the most notable attraction being the bunker that protected current President of the Republic of Rwanda, H.E Paul Kagame during the genocide. The staircase down into the L-shaped dugout with a modest table in the middle is spine-chilling. Also on the grounds, walk through the basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, and the football pitch that gave birth to the reigning national champions, the APR Football Club in 1993. The National Liberation Museum Park is open daily from 8:00am to 6:00pm and closed on Umuganda days (the last Saturday of every month).
