Nelahozeves Castle

This 16th-century Renaissance estate combines the history of a Bohemian noble family, the beauty of the Czech countryside, and one of central Europe’s most important art collections.

About

Nelahozeves Castle is considered to be one of the most important late Renaissance buildings in Bohemia. Situated high above the Vltava River, 35 kilometres north of Prague, the castle is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Construction on the castle started in 1553 by Florian Gryspek, adviser to the Czech king Ferdinand I, but was halted after Gryspek’s death in 1599 before being resumed by his son in 1614. Today, the property is privately owned by the Lobkowicz family, who have been the owners of the castle since 1623, with the exception of the years 1950-1993 - the communist period. Visitors to the castle can explore twelve of the castle’s rooms which illustrate in detail the private life of an influential noble family in Bohemia during the 19th century. The castle is closed to visitors (with the exception of advanced group reservations) from November to March.
