Ireland
This ruined medieval castle boasts Ireland’s finest cylindrical keep.
Nenagh Castle was built in the 13th century by Theobald FitzWalter, and would serve as the seat of the Butler family for the next two hundred years. The 17th century proved especially cruel to the castle, with it being captured and burned on several occasions, ultimately falling into ruin by the end of the century. In the 19th century, the circular keep was restored, with a crown of crenelations and clerestory windows added to transform it into a belltower for a cathedral that was never built. Today, visitors can climb the 101-step spiral staircase to reach the top of the tower for some fantastic views of the area (just watch your head!). While there are information panels on each floor of the keep, the town offers free guided tours for those looking for additional insights into the castle’s history.
