Newgrange

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important examples of prehistoric megalithic art in all of Europe.

About

Built around 3200 BC, Newgrange is a monumental tomb that predates both Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. At 85 metres wide and 12 meters tall, the tomb blended in with the landscape for centuries, only being discovered in 1699 when a local farmer began quarrying the mound. Originally believed to be an exceptionally large passage tomb, archaeologists now believe it had a religious significance, either for a cult of the dead, or astronomical religion. Scientists have calculated that when the structure was built, the entire inner chamber would be illuminated exactly at sunrise on the Summer Solstice. At the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, you’ll find a full-scale replica of the Newgrange Chamber, as well as an audio-visual presentation and interactive exhibits to delve into the history of the site. The tomb itself is only accessible on a guided tour, which should be booked in advance. If you'd like to visit the nearby tombs of Knowth and Dowth, we'd recommend adding an extra hour to your stop. Please book your tickets in advance at https://brunaboinne.admit-one.eu/
