Nicaragua
This calm expanse of jungle filled with flitting butterflies exudes serenity.
The Nicaragua Butterfly Reserve stretches out over 10 kilometers of lush jungle. In an effort to conserves these delicate creatures, which are threatened by habitat loss, the reserve is home to over 20 species of butterflies, as well as 30 types of plants and 50 varieties of flowers that they need to survive. You’re free to explore the reserve on your own, but if you’re interested in learning more about these flying jewels, we’d recommend asking for a guide. There’s an additional 2 kilometers of hiking trails running through the reserve, where you can spot motmots, parakeets, golden orioles, as well as many other birds and insects, and maybe some snakes and lizards too!
