Nicosia

Home to Christian and Turkish Cypriots, this historic city's cultural influences dazzle in white limestone.

About

Nicosia offers a unique experience that you’ll only find in a handful of other cities: it’s split between two countries! The southern half of Nicosia belongs to the Republic of Cyprus, while North Nicosia is the capital of the UN-unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. On both sides of the border, it’s steeped in history and culture, with landmarks that showcase its Venetian, Byzantine, and Ottoman heritage. From the 16th century Venetian Walls that encircle the Old Town to the 17th century Church of Archangelos Michail and 16th century Büyük Han, which now doubles as an artisan market, Nicosia’s history is proudly preserved. For a pick-me-up, stop by Haratsi, an almost-century-old coffee shop. For contemporary Cypriot art, visit the Diachroniki Gallery, showcasing the work of local artists and those inspired by the island. Modernist fans also won’t want to miss Eleftheria Square, a futuristic public space designed by the late Zaha Hadid. An important note: don’t forget to bring your passport if you want to visit both the southern and northern parts of the city!
