Germany
Germany’s oldest functioning boat elevator was a groundbreaking feat of engineering.
Built over the course of three years, when the Niederfinow Boat Lift was completed in 1930, Popular Science Monthly called it “the greatest ship elevator in the world.” At 60 meters high and 94 meters long, this mass of riveted steel is Germany’s oldest surviving ship lift. Along with transporting ships over a 36 meter altitude difference, the lift is now a tourist attraction in its own right, attracting visitors curious to see a turn-of-the-century engineering feat in action. A ticket to the on-site Information Center not only grants access to the informative exhibitions, but also lets you see the lift operating from up-close.
