This museums is dedicated only to the artefacts uncovered at the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nikopolis.
The ancient city of Nikopolis was founded by Caesar Augustus in 29 BC to commemorate his victory over Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. The archaeological site is now UNESCO-listed, which visitors can walk through to admire the ancient amphitheatre, fortified walls, and remains of many other buildings. The artefacts unearthed over years of excavation have been kept in a dedicated museum, which has been open since 1913. The new building, opened in 2009, is focused on the city and the socio-political events surrounding it. In one half of the museum, altars, pottery, metal findings are used to tell the story of the the city’s history - from the naval battle that founded it to its decline. In Hall B, the lives of the city’s citizens are examined through everyday objects, and funerary objects including sarcophagi and cinerary urns.
