Georgia
The ruins of this grand cathedral served as a model for the architecturally significant tetraconch form, predating centuries-old monasteries around Georgia.
Ninotsminda Cathedral may now be in ruins, but it stands as a relic of historical importance in the Kakheti region. Within the complex, a large brick belltower dating from the reign of King Levan of Kakheti stands proudly. The lower three stories of the belltower served as a residence, each floor equipped with a fireplace. Imagine the echoes of crackling fireplaces as you wander through the complex, surrounded by a fortified wall with corner towers and a curtain wall. The wall served as protection against frequent raids by Dagestani mountain tribes during the 16th to 19th centuries. Legend has it that the main temple, St. Nino Church, was built on the resting place of St. Nino, an important figure in Georgian Christianity. The monastery also housed a rich library, with surviving manuscripts serving as evidence of its intellectual and cultural significance. Now operated as a nunnery, visitors can explore the complex, marvel at the remaining structures, and appreciate the rich history, any day from 9AM to 7PM.
