A tribute to a renowned 12th-century Persian poet attracts devoted pilgrims, history buffs and tourists alike.
The Nizami Mausoleum pays tribute to Nizami Ganjavi, originally built in 1947 to replace a collapsed mausoleum that has since uncovered historical secrets. During archaeological excavations in 1940, the remains of an ancient mausoleum from the 13th century buried beneath the ground was discovered. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, the tall cylindrical mausoleum seen today is constructed using solid granite blocks imported from Ukraine. Metal statues depicting scenes from Nizami’s epic poems can be found nearby, with Ganja being the birthplace of the renowned poet. Ganjavi holds a special place in Azerbaijani and world literature, and the mausoleum itself is a modern architectural marvel, featuring a cylindrical red granite structure adorned with golden letters spelling out “Nizami” above the entrance. It also holds historical significance as a site connected to the Russo-Persian War in 1826, during which a battle occurred near the mausoleum and Russian forces were victorious over the Persian army.
