Oman
One of the oldest settlements in Oman, this ancient town is prides itself on its connection to the introduction of Islam in the region.
As Oman’s capital in the 6th and 7th centuries, Nizwa is deeply connected to the country’s Islamic roots. Even in the 1950s, Nizwa was so fiercely religious that British explorer Wilfred Thesiger’s Bedouin guides wouldn’t let him enter the city. Since then, Nizwa has warmed to outsiders and become the second most visited site in the country. It’s still home to some of Oman’s most renowned mosques, including the 9th century So’al Mosque. The main landmark for most visitors is the 17th century fort, which showcases traditional architecture while providing great views of the town and surrounding area. Adjacent to the fort is the Nizwa Souq, which is one of the most important in the country, offering everything from dates and spices to some of Oman’s finest silver jewelry and curved daggers. North of the Old Town is the Falaj Daris Park, which is the best place to see Oman’s UNESCO-listed falaj irrigation system.
