Sweden
This historic industrial city has reinvented itself into an up-and-coming cultural center.
First mentioned in 1283, Norrkoping has been a thriving commercial and industrial hub for centuries. From weapons to ships to textiles, the city’s long industrial heritage earned it the nickname “Sweden's Manchester". The unique Arbetets Museum, situated in an old textile mill on a river island, focuses on industry and work in Sweden, with special focus on the social and environmental impact of industry. Walking the riverside, you’ll find plenty of other historic buildings that preserve Norrkoping’s industrial heritage, but head to Himmelstalund to the west of the city center, and you’ll be able to see a very different history. Here, you’ll find over 1600 petroglyphs depicting boats and hunting scenes that date back around 3,500 years. In recent years, Norrkoping has enjoyed a cultural revival, and is now boasts some excellent art museums, and a growing gastronomic scene.
