Rwanda
Reflect upon unforgettable atrocities at this striking site of remembrance dedicated to honoring victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
Powerful, moving scenes are open to contemplation at the Ntarama Genocide Memorial Centre in the Bugesera District of Rwanda. Five thousand people were killed inside the Catholic church on site after they sought refuge during the 1994 genocide. Step into the brick facades of the church where gunfire and grenade holes remain where Hutu soldiers forced their way inside. Some of the bodies have been placed into coffins in the sanctuaries, and piles of blood stained and ripped clothing line the building. Rusty machetes, spear points, knives, photographs and personal belongings are displayed, along with large rows of skulls and bones. This memorial is not for the faint-hearted, with deeply rousing guided tours detailing first-hand accounts of the event and bringing violent history to light.
