Uruguay
Alpine culture is alive and will in this unique town.
In the mid-1800s, a flood of European immigrants came to Uruguay and founded Nueva Helvecia. Most of the early settlers hailed from Switzerland, which has influenced the town's traditions to this day. Just as you'd expect from any small Swiss town, Nueva Helvecia produces dairy products such as milk, Swiss cheese, cream cheese, ‘dulce de leche’, and yogurt. The town's architecture was likewise influenced by the Old World, with chalet style homes, a beautiful cathedral at the main square, and elegant 19th century hotel all proudly displaying the town's continental roots.
