Aligned with the solstices, this prehistoric tower complex is perhaps the most sophisticated mortarless monument on the planet.
One of the largest neolithic sites in Sardinia, the core of Nuraghe Santu Antine was built sometime around 1600 BC. Over the following centuries, the core tower was built over and expanded upon, including a triangular bastion and a number of circular huts nearby for villagers. Despite being thousands of years old, you can still walk through the three towers, each connected by rough parabolic arches. The main tower has its own separate entrance, with an internal staircase leading from the lower hall to the next floor. Another staircase leads to what would have been the enclosed second floor, but time has left part of the roof collapsed. Moving through these dark passageways of heavy stone, you can definitely feel the weight of history.
