Burundi
In the south-east of Burundi, a huge fault extends over the forest of Nyakazu and holds important historical significance.
According to historical records, the first king of Burundi climbed the mount of Nyakazu Break in the 15th century before continuing his journey through the highlands of Muramyva. Join the vantage point of kings at this stunning fault, extending to the border of Tanzania for over 600 hectares. In 1914 it became a German military post, and so the story goes that the plateau was carved by the boots of soldiers in their retreat before the Belgian forces - giving it the alternate name “German’s Gorge”. Just nearby is the cave of Karera and the falls, which flow through a gallery forest surrounded by a savannah and can be divided into six different branches, spread over three levels. The gorgeous surrounds have been officially proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are not to be missed.
