Dominican Republic
With a focus on ecology and community, the Dominican Republic’s first commercial vineyard grows more than just grapes.
Founded in 2010, OcoaBay Vineyard revives a 500-year-old wine-growing tradition in the Dominican Republic. Doctors Maria and Guillermo planted 27 acres of organic grapes, including French Colombard (white), Tempranillo (red) and Muscat de Hamburg (rose), which they grow without pesticides, insecticides or fungicides. They also built roads and phone lines, employed people from surrounding villages, provided schooling for local children, and are repopulating the mountainside with endemic plant species. The winery and vineyard are part of a larger ecolodge concept that will help the local economy even further. Stop by for a guided tasting experience, which includes 4 glasses of wine, and a selection of organic tapas with ingredients from the property created by 2 Michelin starred Consultant Chef Matt Lightner. And when you’re done, you can soak up some sun by their infinity pool. Reservations are required and children must be over 12 years old. https://ocoabay.com/en/
