Situated at the shores of Lake Chapala, Ocotlan is the gatekeeper to the Chapala resort area, but offers some attractive attractions of its own. Founded in 1530, this is a city of religious significance. There are two cathedrals that line the main plaza. Ocotla houses the church of La Purisima (The Most Pure), which is one of the oldest buildings in the state of Jalisco, with an altar made of gold. The church of Nuestro Senor de Misericordia (Our Merciful Lord), was built in the 1800s after a large earthquake flattened the city, where an apparition of Jesus Christ was seen the following Sunday.
