North Macedonia
This captivating lakefront village offers medieval architecture, waterfront views, and one of the most comprehensive collections of religious icons in the world.
Built mostly between the 7th and 19th centuries, Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, and its 10th century monastery is the oldest Slav monastery in the world. Housing over 800 Byzantine-style icons, its collection is second only to Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. The Old Town’s architecture is the best preserved ancient urban architecture in the Balkans. From the 10th century fortress on the hilltop visitors can see the whole of Lake Ohrid. Walking down through the cobbled streets, a cornucopia of churches and traditional restaurants beckon to passersby before giving way to lakeside cafes and deckchairs.
