About

Onjo-ji, also known as Mii-dera or Nagarasan Onjo-ji, is a prestigious Buddhist temple nestled at the base of Mount Hiei. With a history dating back to the 7th century, Onjo-ji is one of Japan's Four Great Temples, and its revered status is evident through its extensive complex consisting of 40 named buildings. The temple is renowned for its spectacular seasonal beauty. In spring, over 1,500 cherry trees bloom, creating a picturesque scene along Lake Biwa's canal. In autumn, visitors flock to witness the vibrant hues of the maple leaves. Key structures within the temple complex include the Main Hall (Kon-do), Niomon Gate, Amida-do Temple, Akaiya (Three Wells), Bell Pavilion, Bishamondo, Kannondo, Reishodo, and Toin. These buildings house a variety of religious relics, statues, and cultural treasures, such as an exquisite bell and a three-storied pagoda.
