This superb sanctuary gives visitors the chance to see endangered orangutans in their natural environment - or monkeying around in the nursery.
Since 1964, the Orang Utan Sanctuary has been rehabilitating orang utans rescued from logging sites, plantations, orphaned by illegal hunting, or kept as pets. With 4,294 hectares of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve to roam and loving care from the park’s keepers, the Sanctuary prepares the rescued orangutans for life in the wild. Now home to as many as 200 orangutans, the Sanctuary provides two tremendous areas to see these endangered primates. At the nursery, you can enjoy the antics of young orangutans as they learn skills they’ll need to survive in the wild. A boardwalk through the jungle leads to a feeding platform, which often (though not always) sees adults emerging from the forest at feeding times (10 AM and 3PM). The forest is also home to bold macaques, and plenty of other species, so keep an eye out!
