Oravsky hrad

Orava Castle was used as the location of Count Orlok’s Transylvanian castle in the original 1922 Nosferatu movie and is one of Slovakia’s foremost national monuments.

About

This wonderfully preserved castle is steeped in history and was built in 1241, although, after extensive rebuilding over the centuries, its present appearance did not take shape until 1611. Today, visitors can discover the castle's history and secrets on a guided tour. Many of the rooms are furnished with displays of armor, artwork and antiques while others are set up as a museum containing historical items. The entire seventeenth-century atmosphere of the castle is enhanced by local students and actors in period costume who act and behave accordingly. Be prepared to encounter live performances including dancing, singing, fencing, archery and a display of birds of prey. For those prepared to stretch their legs and tackle the numerous stairs (approximately 500) to the highest point of the castle tower, then the rewards are well worth the aches and pains, with spectacular views of the village below and the imposing Tatra Mountains in the distance. Before scheduling your trip, please confirm the castle's hours and tour availability at http://www.oravskemuzeum.sk/
