The sculpture garden full of religious imagery miraculously made it through the oppressive Soviet regime.
In the Soviet Union, life was hard for artists and religious people as both were repressed (or worse). Constantly harassed by the Soviet system, Christian artist Vilius Orvidas rebelled by creating a beautiful sculpture garden on his family’s land. Working with wood and stone, the self-trained artist quietly created his religious artwork. Though he didn’t directly oppose the regime, many considered him a brave rebel. Today, Orvidas’ work, and religious imagery his father had saved from destruction, fill this garden where visitors are treated to innumerable sculptures, and surprising revelations at every turn, including insight into life behind the Iron Curtain.
