Lebanon
Sitting high above the deep blue Mediterranean Sea is this captivating Marian shrine, enveloped by lush greenery and trees.
Perched 287 meters atop Cape Theoprosopon in Hamat, Saydet el Nourieh, or "Our Lady of Light," offers breathtaking views of the sea below. Hamat's history is intertwined with biblical references, marking the northern edge of the kingdom of Byblos during ancient times. This shrine dates back to the 4th century, with legend having it that two sailors, lost at sea during a fierce storm, prayed to the Virgin Mary for guidance. She appeared as a guiding light, leading them safely to the shore of Theoprosopon. In gratitude, the sailors carved a cave in the cliff where the light had shone and dedicated it to the Virgin Mary. A Greek Orthodox monastery was established nearby in the 17th century, where the miraculous icon of the Theotokos, glowing with light, drew wayward ships to safety. Today, Our Lady of Light is a significant pilgrimage site, attracting visitors from around the world who come to admire the serene bay view from atop historic Cape Theoprosopon and to pay homage to the Virgin Mary, the guiding light in Lebanon's rich Christian history.
