Mexico
Dominated by a monumental clock, this former silver mining town is home to Mexico’s oldest football club.
Pachuca began as a Spanish silver mining town in the 16th century, with the precious or attracting a larger population of English immigrants. It was these English (mostly Cornish) immigrants who established the Pachuca Athletic Club in 1900, which gave rise to C.F. Pachuca - one of Mexico’s most successful professional clubs. While Pachuca eats and breathes football, the Cornish were also responsible for the city’s other main landmark: the Monumental Clock of Pachuca, which was inaugurated on 15 September 1910 in celebration of the Centennial of Mexico's Independence. Around town you’ll also find vestiges from its days as a wealthy mining town, like the Asunción Church, the Cajas Reales, where miners paid a 20% share of their extractions to the Spanish Crown, the Baroque Church and ex monastery of San Francisco, which now also houses a photography museum. While walking around, be sure to get a pastes - a Mexican twist on the Cornish pastie.
