Ukraine
Perched on a dormant volcano, this majestic medieval castle lets visitors immerse themselves in history through exploration, exhibits, special events, and even costume rentals.
Built atop a volcano in the 14th century, Palanok castle was one of the most fortified castles in the Ukraine, and was used as was used as an all-European political prison after the storming of the Bastille. This majestic fortification is famous for its ties to folk heroes - in the 17th century, Croatian-Hungarian princess Ilona Zrini held off the Austrian Emperor's army for three years from within the castle, and the Hungarian national poet Sándor Petőfi (1823-49) was imprisoned here in the 19th century. Today, visitors can explore this picturesque landmark’s many wings and arcaded levels. In the castle museum, 10 different exhibits display an array of historic and ethnographic objects, ranging from ancient icons to traditional clothing, or visitors can head down to the cellar to sample some local wines.
