Italy
A team of artists was brought in to create one of Italy’s most decadent pleasure palaces, known locally as ‘Delizia’, or ‘Delight’.
In the 15th century, the d'Este family acquired a medieval castle, and began a centuries-long renovation project. By the mid-16th century, the castle had been replaced with a summer villa, and less than 100 years later, Duke Francesco I d'Este initially commissioned the building of the present structure. Referencing Tuscan villas rather than the popular Venetian or French styles, facade is a testament to the Duke’s pride in his native culture. Best known for its rich 17th century frescoes by French artist Jean Boulanger, and a team of talented Italian artists, who also worked on the palace decor. The palace grounds are equally impressive, with the fanciful Peschiera, or fish-tank, designed by Cavalli to resemble a ruined amphitheater being particularly striking. While the guided tour through the elaborate rooms is sure to make your jaw drop, the friendly and well-informed guides make it a real delight.
