The abbey is perched on a hill and can be seen from many miles away and was selected by Pope John Paul II as a site to visit in 1996. There is plenty to see and discover at the abbey which is still in use today, employing 50 monks and containing a boarding school for Benedictine monks. Often regarded as the cradle of Christianity in Hungary, the impressive library contains 300 ancient prints and over 400,000 books plus the oldest Hungarian language document dating back to 1055. Besides the historic library, visitors will want to explore the thirteenth-century basilica and crypt, the cloisters and the Baroque refectory. When you’ve finished on the inside then take a stroll around the large abbey grounds that feature an incredible arboretum and a botanical garden as well as the winery and the restaurant that provides million dollar views of the surroundings.
