In the heart of Icod de los Vinos, a stunning park housing Canarian flora and a thousand-year-old dragon tree at its center is a must-see stop in Tenerife.
The oldest and largest dragon tree in existence, “El Drago Milenario”, stands proudly with its dense, spindly branches in the Parque del Drago. Estimated to be between 800 to 1,000 years old, the elderly specimen of “Dracaena draco” harbors ancient legends. Across the island of Tenerife, it is said that the Romans sought the unique red resin of El Drago Milenario for its protective properties in battle. The park is home to an array of plants native to Tenerife and the Canary islands, including giant cacti, cardoons, spurges and other small dragon trees. Pack a picnic and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Teide from a designated picnic area, and check out a recreation of a Guanche burial in a nearby cave. Tickets are €5 and the park is open every day from April to September and October to March.
