Mexico
The cradle of Mexican wine sits in the middle of the desert of Coahuila and is a haven in the midst of aridity.
Green vineyards and cypress trees will fold you into an oasis in the otherwise scorching surrounds of Parras de la Fuente. Spaniards who founded the town at the end of the 16th century realized the area’s climate was perfect for vines and ushered in a longstanding winemaking tradition. The oldest winery on the continent, Casa Madero, calls Parras de la Fuente home. Visit in August for the jubilant Grape and Wine Fair, with cultural events, wine and brand tastings, Coahuilan snacks and symbolic grape-stomping. The village itself has an air of old charm and contains several historic landmarks including the Church of Madero, which appears in the right quarter of the city’s coat of arms. The Church occupies almost the entire summit of the Sombreretillo hill and is a great architectural symbol of the city, with 360-degree views of the vast Coahuila desert from the top.
