Italy
One of the largest and most ornate monastic complexes in Italy, this stunning compound was designed by the architects responsible for Milan's cathedral.
Construction on Pavia Monastery began in 1396 by the same architects who crafted the Duomo of Milan. As architectural styles shifted over the course of its 100-year construction, the monastery developed a special mix of late-Gothic and early Renaissance styles. This unique masterpiece has both grand and small cloisters, detailed stained glass windows, and frescoes adorning the apse of the church. While exploring the interior, keep an eye out for the tomb of the founder, works by Bergognone, and the triptych by Baldassare degli Embriachi made using hippopotamus teeth and ivory.
