Hungary
The city of Pecs in Hungary is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Necropolis of Sopianae — the largest Christian burial chamber outside of Italy.
The history of Pecs stretches back over 2,000 years to its first Celtic settlements before it became part of the Roman Empire. Today, the city is well known for its art and culture and is home to the world-famous Zsolnay ceramics and the largest Turkish ruins in Hungary. The fourth-century Necropolis of Sopianae contains a number of underground tombs with incredible murals that depict Christian themes. The site is open to visitors who can also delve deeper into the history of the tombs at the Visitor Center. Among the city’s many historic landmarks is the iconic Gazi Kasim Mosque, which is an example of the extensive Turkish and Islamic architecture that flourished when the city was under occupation. Pecs is also situated in the country’s warmest wine region, so after sampling the cultural delights of the city then why not relax with a glass of one of the region’s must tries — Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Fran, and Merlot.
