This stunning river gorge is known to fantasy fans around the world for its appearance in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Centered around a rocky river gorge, the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve is one of the last surviving stretches of native riverside forest in the region. A short walk through the green forest leeds down to the rocky riverside which saw Bilbo and the dwarves bobbing in barrels - Stephen Hunter’s (Bombur) favorite day on set. While there isn’t a barrel ride, the rocks lining the beautiful blue river make great jumping points for your own adventure. Alternatively, you can make the 2-hour return trip up to small but mossy Elvy Falls, following the river through the bird-filled forest and passing another cascade on the way.
