Finland
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an endearing testament to the wooden church architecture of eastern Scandinavia.
The Petäjävesi Old Church dates back to the mid-18th century, when Finland was under Swedish rule. Crafted entirely from pine logs, its interior is a mesmerizing blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. All of the interior elements were crafted by local artisans, infusing it with an individual identity. After a newer church was built near by, the Petäjävesi Old Church fell into disuse - that is, until art historian Josef Strzygowski noticed its value and began the first restoration. UNESCO even made it a World Heritage Site as unique example of traditional Nordic wooden church. Admire the painted exterior from the shores of the nearby lake before heading inside to appreciate the elegant construction details and hand-carved decorations. In the winter, the Petäjävesi Old Church is open by request only. To check entrance fees, opening times visit https://petajavesioldchurch.fi/come-visit-us/?lang=en
