Take in one of the best views in the Lake Region at these volcano-backed rapids.
Watched over by the conical Osorno Volcano, the Petrohue Waterfalls are a picturesque testament to the area’s more violent geological past. Originally, the entire area was one large lake, but repeated volcanic eruptions split this into the Llanquihue and Todos Los Santos Lakes, and the polished black stone that the Petrohue Waterfalls spill over is basaltic lava that piled up from the eruptions. The pyramid-shaped volcano with its snow-capped peak looks a lot like Mount Fuji in Japan, except from the Petrohue Waterfalls the view is amplified by the rushing rapids surrounded by temperate forest.
