Enjoy the view and learn about the sad fate of a local natural wonder.
La Piedra Movediza, or the Wobbly stone, was a 300-ton balanced boulder in the Buenos Aires province, famous for its delicate position on top of a hill and constant rocking in a very slow fashion. It was pretty much considered a natural wonder by the locals, until it fell and shattered in 1912 with no witnesses around. Different theories exist to explain the fall, some saying it was due to vibrations caused by an explosion in a nearby quarry, and others – it was an act of vandalism. The replica of the stone, installed in 2007, still attracts visitors and serves as a talisman for the city it overlooks, Tandil. The hilltop the replica is located on is a short hike and offers beautiful views, and the original stone can still be seen lying at the bottom of the hill, shattered in pieces.
