Pisek

The nickname of the South Bohemian town of Písek is a reference to its long-standing reputation as the home of education in the Czech Republic.

About

Although the town has many educational institutes, it is the famous stone bridge that visitors flock to see, which is a national cultural monument and the jewel of the town. The simply named Stone Bridge, built before the end of the thirteenth-century, is the oldest bridge in the Czech Republic and predates the more well-known Charles Bridge in Prague. The structure has weathered seven centuries of wars and floods to remain modern Písek's most valuable and beautiful piece of historic architecture. The bridge is lined with decorative Baroque sculptures each with a story to tell. Over the centuries, the structure has withstood floods and storms many times, the most recent being the devastating floods of 2002 when it disappeared completely underwater. The bridge provides a great spot for picture taking and soaking up the sights and sounds of this vibrant and exemplary town while relaxing in one of the numerous nearby cafés.
