New Zealand
Following an old gold-mining water race, this pleasant walking trail showcases New Zealand’s lush subtropical forest and stunning coastal landscapes.
The Point Elizabeth Walkway begins in regenerating native forest before entering the Rapahoe Scenic Reserve - one of the country’s finest remaining tracts of mixed coastal forest. Along the way, you’ll pass nikau palms and mamaku (black tree fern) intertwined with jack vines and kiekie. Towering above them are huge podocarps like rimu, kahikatea, with the serpentine roots of northern rata adding a pop of crimson during summer. The forest is alive with the sounds of native birds like fantails, tomtits, grey warblers, and bellbirds, which eventually give way to the roar of crashing waves as you near the coastal cliffs. From the viewing platform, you’ll have a great view of the entire coast, and the sea stacks that mark where the point used to extend to.
