Porto Palermo Castle

According to many locals, Porto Palermo Castle was built in the 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena. However, the fort’s triangular design with round towers suggests it was built by the Venetians before the advent of the star fort. Another clue to the fort’s age is that it would have been susceptible to cannon fire from the nearby hills in the 18th century. Under the Communist regime, the fort served as a barracks for the nearby submarine base. Today, visitors are free to explore the fort’s historic grounds, admire its beautiful views, and walk down to enjoy the beach below.
