Posadas

The best way to experience this laid-back city’s colorful street art is with a mate or terere in hand.

About

Posadas was originally a Paraguayan river port and trading post known as Trinchera de los Paraguayos, but changed its name in 1879 to honor the national hero Gervasio Antonio Posadas. Today, most travellers just see the city as a stopping point, but it’s laid-back atmosphere and pleasant riverside setting warrant a bit of exploration. The city has a surprising wealth of street art, and along with colorful murals, you’ll stumble across decorated stairways and giant metal statues. The 15-meter-tall cubist monument to Andres Guazurari is the city’s most impressive work of art, made even better by its riverside location. The statue stands on a long boardwalk where locals exercise, or relax with a mate - there’s even a small beach where you can take a dip if terere isn’t enough to beat the heat.
