The perfect place for the death-obsessed Camaldolian monks to live was in isolation on the idyllic Wigry Lake.
In the 17th century, King Jan II Kazimierz Waza brought a group of Camaldolese monks to Wigry, giving them an island on which to build their monastery. Over the centuries, the island became a peninsula, but the monastery’s beautiful complex, complete with church and 17 hermitages remain as charming as ever. Jutting out into the lake, visitors are rewarded with stupendous views while exploring the serene complex, admiring the historic architecture, and religious artwork found within. Fortunately, if the walking build up an appetite, the complex now houses a restaurant for weary travellers.
