Journey deep into the Dreznicka Gradina mountains on a guided tour of the Potpecka Cave, a multi-tiered cave system still being mapped and excavated.
Potpecka Cave’s horseshoe-shaped entrance is the largest in the Balkans and among the largest in the world, standing at 164 feet (50 m) tall and 82 feet (25 m) wide at the arch. This massive gateway opens up an underground world with two levels of cave networks where you can take a guided tour of roughly 555 meters of illuminated passageways (although the cave extends much further into the Dreznicka Gradina mountains). Humans have inhabited Potpecka Cave since the Neolithic period, with important archeological finds still being discovered. This stop requires some physical fitness, as the descent into the cave system includes 300 stairs (not to mention the ascent back to the surface!). A jacket is recommended for the cool underground temperatures, as well as sturdy shoes for the damp staircases. The cave is not accessible from October through March due to winter weather conditions.
