Princess Margaret Rose Cave

Huge, semi-translucent formations make this one of Australia's best show caves.

About

Even though the Princess Margaret Rose Cave is over 700,000 years old, it wasn't discovered until 1936. Since then, it has become one of the country's best show caves, thanks in large part to the fabulous flow stone formations (stalagmites and stalactites) that lines its walls, ceilings, and floors. It can take 50 years for the semi-translucent stalagmites and stalactites to grow a centimeter, and even so, some of the largest in the Princess Margaret Rose Cave are over six metres long! While you can visit the cave on its own, an even better way to experience this natural gem is on a guided river cruise through a limestone gorge (needs to be booked in advance at http://www.glenelgrivercruises.com.au/cave_tour.html).
