The interior and exterior of this UNESCO-listed church are covered in paintings dating back to the 16th century.
Founded by Petru Rares in 1530, it took two years to complete the frescoes that covered the interior and exterior of the church. Over the next few decades, additional buildings were erected to complete the complex, including a perimeter wall, all of which have been claimed by time, leaving only the church and residence behind. In the 1800s, many of the faded original murals were painted over, but UNESCO restoration efforts have managed to reveal the original paintings. Along with the beautiful murals covering the interior and parts of the exterior, the church also utilizes some unique architectural techniques not found elsewhere, such as a complicated system of arches, apses and pendentives to create naos.
